Gibson - RD Standard Bass - - E-Bass - USA - 1978

1978 Gibson RD Standard Bass Super rare professional bass guitar made at the Gibson plant in Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA in 1978. It has all original hardware and electrics apart from the tuners which were replaced at some point with Schallers. This is a long scale bass with a 34.5 scale length, ebony fingerboard and a set neck. The serial number is 73328119 and ‘Second’ is stamped to the rear of the headstock indicating it was originally sold with, probably, some minor flaw to the finish. Nearly 50 years later it is impossible to tell what that flaw might have been. The RD Standard bass was produced from just 1977 to 1979 with an overall production of about 900-950 making it much rarer than the more expensive RD Artist bass which had active electronics provided by Moog. Today, the RD Artist is considered unreliable with potentially non-repairable Moog circuitry while the RD Standard is a good solid instrument fitted with two specially designed Series-III humbucking pickups. The bass is in excellent working condition. It has a super low action and incredible tone. The finish is in good condition for the age. There is play wear in the usual places and a few knocks and dings. In some places the finish is slightly flat and the guitar would benefit from a professional clean. That said, the guitar presents well and could be used immediately, it just depends on the preferences of the new owner. Overall, the bass is in good acceptable condition for its age and ready to play. The original Gibson case is included, in good condition and perfectly usable but some stitching to the exterior cover has come loose. Overall, a super rare original Gibson bass from the 1970s, imposing in its black finish and ebony neck.
