A traditional Japanese chôzu’bachi 手水鉢 (water basin) made from a single piece of grey granite. The sides carved with grip handles. This type is known as Tetsubachi 鉄鉢, which translates to 'iron basin', mimicking the globular metal bowls traditionally used by mendicant priests. Chôzu’bachi, also known as a water reservoir for cleansing, is a traditional feature in Japanese gardens. Beyond its ornamental appeal, it serves a ritual purpose as a vessel for washing hands and rinsing the mouth before entering sacred spaces such as temples, shrines, or tea gardens. When used in such contexts, it is referred to as a tsukubai 蹲. These basins embody the Japanese ideals of purity and mindfulness, symbolising both physical and spiritual preparation.
