Borana Zeremonialrock-Verzierung, Äthiopien / Kenia (Ohne mindestpreis)

Borana ceremonial skirt ornament, Ethiopia / Kenya HIGHLIGHTS • Fine Borana ceremonial ornament • Large hammered copper-alloy disk • Striking central conical projection • Rich incised and repoussé decoration • Beautiful warm old patina • Provenance: ex Alan Donovan collection • Mounted on stand DETAILS Origin: Borana people, Ethiopia / Kenya Material: Copper alloy Dimensions: Diameter: 16 cm; Height: 33 cm with stand Provenance: Ex Alan Donovan collection Period: 20th century Included: Display stand DESCRIPTION INTRODUCTION A fine Borana ceremonial ornament distinguished by its large circular form, rich surface decoration and striking raised central element. Both graphic and sculptural, it is a strong example of East African personal adornment associated with ceremonial dress. CONTEXT / USE Among Borana communities of southern Ethiopia and northern Kenya, metal ornaments of this type were associated with women’s ceremonial attire and belong to the broader sphere of status-related adornment. Their importance lies not only in their decorative presence, but also in their social and symbolic visibility when worn. FORM AND DECORATION This example takes the form of a large circular disk animated by concentric bands of finely worked ornament. The surface combines incised linear decoration with raised dotted borders, while the center is dominated by a faceted conical projection that gives the piece its distinctive visual force. Small perforations near the edge indicate how the ornament was originally attached to a garment. SURFACE AND PATINA The metal has developed a beautiful warm honey-brown patina, softened by age and use. The surface wear is coherent and attractive, enhancing both the repoussé work and the fine engraved details. CONDITION Good overall condition. Age-related wear and surface marks consistent with use. Minor irregularities and oxidation consistent with age. Mounted on display stand.
