Kutani-Ware facettierte Blumenvase mit Johannisbeer-Motiv - Porzellan - 川崎忠夫 Kawasaki Tadao - Japan - 1900–2000

Item Description: 川崎忠夫 Kawasaki Tadao — Kutani Ware Mentori Flower Vase with Overglaze Enamel Currant Design (色絵酸塊文面取花入れ) A refined and elegant Kutani ware (Kutaniyaki, 九谷焼) flower vase (hanaike, 花入れ) by ceramic artist Kawasaki Tadao, featuring a distinctive faceted form (mentori, 面取) and delicate overglaze enamel (iro-e, 色絵) decoration of currant (suguri, 酸塊) motifs. The mentori technique — in which the surface of the vessel is carved into multiple flat facets before firing — gives this piece a refined, architectural quality that distinguishes it from conventional round-bodied vases. The facets create an interplay of light across the surface, enhancing the luminosity of the enamel decoration. The currant (suguri) motif, rendered with Kutani's characteristic richness of colour and meticulous brushwork, depicts clusters of small berries and foliage in a naturalistic yet stylised manner deeply rooted in the Japanese decorative tradition. Kutani ware, produced in the Kaga region of Ishikawa Prefecture, is celebrated worldwide for its bold, jewel-like palette of overglaze enamels — deep greens, rich reds, purples, yellows, and black — applied over a white porcelain ground. This piece exemplifies the refined, painterly quality for which contemporary Kutani artists are particularly admired. The work is accompanied by its original signed wooden presentation box (tomobako, 共箱) and protective cloth (tomobuno, 共布), confirming its authenticity. Size Height: 27.5 cm Width: 18 cm Depth: 7 cm Weight: 2,880 g Condition The vase is in near-mint condition with no notable damage, chips, or repairs. Artist Profile 川崎忠夫 Kawasaki Tadao is a Japanese ceramic artist working in the Kutani ware (Kutaniyaki, 九谷焼) tradition of Ishikawa Prefecture.
