3x traditionelle Kokeshi-Puppen - Holz - Japan - Shōwa Zeit (1926-1989)

This lot consists of three traditional Japanese Kokeshi dolls, handcrafted wooden folk dolls originating from the Tohoku region of northern Japan. Kokeshi dolls are one of Japan’s most beloved folk crafts and have been made by skilled artisans since the late Edo period. Each doll is turned from wood on a lathe and then hand-painted with simple yet charming facial expressions and traditional decorative motifs. The warm natural wood grain combined with the soft hand-painted colors gives these dolls a gentle and nostalgic character that reflects the aesthetic of Japanese folk art. The three dolls in this set show different traditional design styles. One features large red floral motifs reminiscent of peony or chrysanthemum patterns, a classic decorative theme in Kokeshi art. Another doll is decorated with repeated red floral patterns along the body, creating a rhythmic and elegant appearance. The third doll has a more minimalist style with traditional red stripes and a classic hairstyle design. The expressions of the dolls are calm and warm, typical of traditional Kokeshi craftsmanship, and each piece has subtle differences that highlight the handmade nature of the work. These dolls display a beautiful patina from age, enhancing their vintage character and authenticity. Kokeshi dolls were historically made as souvenirs for visitors to hot spring resorts in northern Japan and are now widely appreciated worldwide as collectible examples of Japanese folk art. A set like this is ideal for collectors of Japanese crafts, interior decoration, or those interested in traditional Japanese culture. The bottoms of the dolls contain handwritten inscriptions indicating the maker or origin. Please note that the Coca-Cola can shown in the photographs is for size reference only and is not included in the lot. Artist / Maker Profile: Kokeshi dolls are a traditional folk craft from the Tohoku region of Japan, particularly from areas such as Miyagi, Fukushima, Yamagata, and Akita prefectures. The craft began during the late Edo period and was developed by woodworkers known as kijishi, who produced these dolls as souvenirs for travelers visiting local hot springs. Over time, distinct regional styles emerged, each with its own characteristic facial expressions, body shapes, and painted motifs. Traditional Kokeshi are still made today by skilled artisans and are highly regarded as a representative form of Japanese mingei (folk craft). Because these dolls carry hand-written marks on the base, they were likely produced by traditional craftsmen working within one of the regional Kokeshi traditions.
