Item Description:
翁永岳仙 Onaga Gakusen — Ryūmon (Dragon Gate)
This hanging scroll (kakejiku) presents a masterful depiction of Ryūmon — the Dragon Gate — one of the most celebrated and auspicious subjects in the Japanese painting tradition.
Painted in mineral pigments and ink on silk (kinubon) with confident, expressive brushwork, the composition portrays the legendary scene in which a carp ascends the roaring torrent of the Dragon Gate waterfall, striving with fierce determination to transform into a dragon.
The tumbling cascades of white water are rendered with dynamic, swirling brushwork, conveying both the raw power of the current and the indomitable spirit of the fish pressing forward against it.
The image draws on a beloved theme in Japanese painting — the carp's leap as a symbol of perseverance, ambition, and ultimate triumph — making this work not only a beautiful decorative object but also a profound expression of aspiration.
The composition balances the dramatic energy of the rushing water against the resolute form of the ascending carp, creating a work of lasting visual impact.
The scroll bears the artist's seal (rakkan) and is presented in its original tomobako (artist-attributed wooden storage box).
The mounting is executed in a traditional format with silk brocade borders.
Size
Height: 188 cm (image area: 106 cm)
Width: 53 cm (image area: 40 cm)
Depth: 2.7 cm
Condition
The scroll shows age-related staining (shimi) on the painting surface; the accompanying tomobako also displays staining. Overall consistent with the age and nature of an antique work.
