Magnum photographer Stuart Franklin’s 1989 photograph presents a lone man — known as “Tank Man”—standing in defiance before a line of T59 tanks in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square. Dressed in a white shirt and holding shopping bags, he blocks the convoy with quiet resolve. Shot from a balcony near the Beijing Hotel, the image became an enduring symbol of nonviolent resistance and individual courage in the face of state power.
