Chimú Blackware Effigy Vessel with Warriors and Lunar Motif - North Coast Peru

Globular blackware vessel rising to a tall cylindrical neck topped with a modeled anthropomorphic head, the face detailed with almond-shaped eyes and incised markings; small perforations at the ears likely once held ornaments.
The body is decorated in framed relief panels depicting warriors in profile holding clubs, alternating with the important Chimú lunar motif of a mythic “moon animal” standing upon a crescent-shaped moon.
Dark grey to black burnished surface from reduction firing.

Condition: Surface encrustation, stable age-related cracking to the lower body and probe hole at the back.

Time period: Ca 800 - 1000 AD
Dimensions: 16,5 cm high
