KI-gestützte Zusammenfassung

Vom Verkäufer bereitgestellte Beschreibung

This small Phoenician sarcophagus, dating from the 5th century BC, is a remarkable representation of the funerary practices of this civilization. Carved in limestone, its design reflects the synthesis of cultural influences that characterize Phoenician art, with stylistic elements reminiscent of both Egyptian and Greek iconography.

Its shape is stylized and elongated, with a compact volume and a finish that emphasizes the verticality of the piece. At the top, a face stands out, sculpted in relief, with soft features and wavy hair, which conveys a serene expression. This type of representation is associated with the belief in the immortality of the soul and the protection of the deceased in the afterlife, a recurring idea in Phoenician culture.

Along the body of the sarcophagus, small circular marks arranged in a vertical line can be observed, possibly decorative or symbolic elements that could allude to ritual or religious aspects. The lower part of the piece features a carved base that gives it stability, suggesting that it may have been designed to be displayed in a funerary or votive context.

Despite the passage of time, the sarcophagus is in a good state of preservation, with its structure intact and the sculpted details still visible. Its rough appearance and chisel marks indicate a handcrafted work, probably carried out by a local sculptor following iconographic models passed down through generations.

This sarcophagus is a tangible testimony to Phoenician funerary practices and their complex interaction with other Mediterranean cultures. Its function was not only to contain the remains of the deceased, but also to serve as a vehicle of spiritual protection, ensuring passage to the afterlife according to the beliefs of the time.

Acquired from a Spanish private collection, S.V.S, 1980.
- The piece includes authenticity certificate as well as Spanish Export License (Passport for European Union).

IMPORTANT: Due to the new laws on the export of archaeological pieces, we have decided to NO LONGER sell outside the European territory for the following countries: SWITZERLAND & UNITED STATES of AMERICA.

For other destinations out of European territory: all our items will be shipped after obtaining a definitive LICENSE EXPORTATION by the Ministry of Culture of Spain.
