Vom Verkäufer bereitgestellte Beschreibung
African Ritual Mask with Geometric Crest – Wood & Raffia – Côte d’Ivoire
A striking African tribal mask carved from wood and fitted with original raffia elements, featuring an unusual geometric crest structure above the head.
The mask displays a calm, elongated face with almond-shaped eyes, a long straight nose, and a slightly open mouth. Fine linear scarification marks are carved on the cheeks, enhancing its expressive yet balanced appearance.
Particularly remarkable is the large sculptural superstructure above the head, decorated with geometric patterns and triangular motifs. Such elements are typically associated with ceremonial or ritual use and may have carried symbolic meaning.
The reverse shows original raffia bindings and fastening elements, indicating that the mask was once part of a larger costume ensemble used in performances or rituals.
The surface presents a deep, dark patina with visible wear, consistent with age and handling. Minor losses, cracks, and age-related wear are present.
Likely origin: West Africa, possibly Côte d’Ivoire region (Baule / Guro / Senufo cultural sphere).
Provenance: Private collection, Freiburg (Germany).
Dimensions:
45 x 9 x 13 cm
Condition:
Good overall condition with age-related wear, patina, and minor losses.
