JRO Illuminated Desk Globe with Copper Meridian, West Germany, late 20th century
Made by JRO Kartogr. Verlagsgesellschaft mbH in Munich, Federal Republic of Germany. This illuminated terrestrial globe is mounted on a wooden base with a turned wood support and a genuine copper semi-circular meridian.
Produced in the late 20th century. Designed as a desk globe and ambient study lamp, it combines cartographic function with warm interior presence. The typography, political mapping and materials are characteristic of West German educational and domestic design of the period.
Condition is good, with visible light wear to the wooden base and minor age-related traces on the underside and labels. The globe illuminates and functions properly. The printed cartography remains clear and decorative both unlit and lit.
Its value is supported by the West German manufacture, working illuminated function, attractive color palette, and the combination of wood, copper and printed globe sphere. Decorative desk globes with original period construction remain desirable in both design and scientific object categories.
This piece represents the practical and well-made educational objects produced in West Germany during the second half of the 20th century, when domestic design often combined utility, clarity and restrained material quality.
Size: H 42 cm x W 36 cm x D 32 cm
