Vom Verkäufer bereitgestellte Beschreibung
Turkana Headdress – Kenya –Hair & String – Mid-20th Century
Details
Origin: Turkana people
Country: Kenya
Materials: hair, string
Dimensions: L 24 cm / H 39 cm with stand
Period: Mid-20th century
Provenance: Ex private French collection
Description
Rare Turkana headdress made of hair, built up and consolidated over a fine internal string structure. Its dense black surface, subtle ribbed texture, and highly reduced form give it a striking sculptural presence.
The only visible embellishments are a few small tubular elements in fine cord, intended to receive ostrich feathers. Documented Turkana coiffures and hairpieces confirm the use of such feather bases, as well as the importance of elaborate hair constructions in a pastoral, semi-nomadic context.
This example is particularly sober and elegant. Its softly asymmetrical silhouette may evoke an animal form, but its strength lies above all in its abstraction, material presence, and ethnographic authenticity.
A scarce and powerful piece, combining fragility, restraint, and strong visual impact.
Condition
Overall good condition, with age-related wear, minor losses, and small imperfections consistent with use and age. Please refer to the photographs for details.
Included
Custom-made wooden stand included.
