藤原弘美 Fujiwara Hiromi Bronze Japanese Spiny Lobster Ornaments Jizai Okimono with Box
自在置物 Jizai Okimono
A form of Japanese metalwork that has been practised since the mid-Edo period. Figures of dragons, snakes, prawns, insects and other creatures are crafted realistically from sheets of iron, copper or silver, and their joints and segments can be moved just like the real thing. Drawing on the techniques of armourers, they are operated by complex internal mechanisms.
This finely made articulated sculpture represents a spiny lobster (Ise-ebi) with remarkable realism, constructed from multiple hand-shaped bronze elements that allow natural movement of the legs, antennae, and segmented body. Rooted in the tradition of Jizai Okimono, a form of Japanese metalwork developed since the mid-Edo period by armourers, the piece reflects both technical sophistication and sculptural sensitivity. The warm coppery patina enhances the organic presence of the work, while the detailed surface and balanced proportions demonstrate careful craftsmanship. Complete with its box, this piece serves as both a collectible example of modern Japanese metal art and an elegant decorative object that brings a refined, tactile presence to any interior space.
Box dimensions: 6.2" x 4.3" x 3.6" / 15.8cm x 11cm x 9.2cm
