Description:
This lacquered tray by Kumi Hayashi presents a striking balance between modern minimalism and decorative craft. The body is formed in an elegant, softly squared shape with subtly flared corners, giving the piece a sculptural silhouette rather than a conventional rectangular outline. Its broad central field is finished in a deep, lustrous black lacquer, smooth and reflective, creating a calm and refined visual center.
What makes the tray especially distinctive is the decorative treatment along the rim. One side is accented with an abstract, organic design in shimmering tones that appear to incorporate iridescent shell-like inlay, set against a warm reddish-brown ground. The motif suggests pebbles, leaves, or flowing natural forms, adding movement and contrast to the otherwise restrained black surface. The underside or edge is finished in vivid red, a classic lacquer detail that gives the tray a subtle but dramatic highlight when viewed from the side.
This is a sophisticated contemporary lacquer work that combines clean geometry with poetic surface decoration. It would function beautifully as a serving tray, display piece, or decorative object, and it reflects Kumi Hayashi’s refined approach to lacquer art.
