Item Description:
光陽 Kōyō — 九谷焼 Kutani-yaki
A monumental and visually arresting Kutani-yaki (九谷焼) vessel titled Kinpaku Nami (金泊波, "Gold Foil Waves"), by the artist Kōyō (光陽), presented in its original wooden storage box (tomobako, 共箱) with handwritten title and seal.
The vase takes a bold, full-bodied globular form — a generously rounded shoulder tapering to a wide, everted rim — entirely enveloped in a luminous surface treatment of extraordinary richness.
Sheets and fragments of gold foil (kinpaku, 金泊) have been applied directly to a deep, warm amber-brown glaze ground, then fired under a clear overglaze.
The result is a surface of exceptional visual depth: areas of brilliant, burnished gold alternate with exposed amber beneath, while the natural torn edges and fine vein-like tracery of the foil create an organic, wave-like movement across the vessel — precisely evoking the work's title.
The colour shifts dramatically with changes in light, moving from deep olive-gold to rich amber depending on the viewing angle, giving the piece a living, luminous quality unlike any painted decoration.
The interior of the neck is glazed in clean white, providing a striking contrast to the opulent exterior.
The base bears the artist's handwritten red signature seal.
An exceptional display vessel of considerable presence and weight, this is a sophisticated work that places itself squarely within the tradition of Kutani's most ambitious decorative arts.

Artist Profile
光陽 Kōyō — Kutani-yaki (九谷焼)
Kōyō is an artist name associated with the Kutani porcelain tradition of Ishikawa Prefecture. Kutani ware, originating around 1655 and revived in the early 19th century, is designated a National Traditional Craft (Dentō Kōgeihin) and is celebrated for its bold, ambitious surface decoration. The kinpaku (金泊, gold foil) technique employed in this work — in which sheets of gold leaf are applied to a glazed ground and fired under a transparent overglaze — is among the most demanding and visually spectacular of Kutani's decorative methods, requiring precise timing and kiln control to achieve the luminous, organically patterned surface seen here. Detailed biographical information on this artist is not available at this time.
