Figure blolo bian
Baule, Ivory Coast, early 20th century
Wood
30 cm height and 34,5 cm height with stand.
Good Contidion, see photos.
Provenance: Private collection, France, with old number "65".
Nice Patina.
The wooden figures of the Baoulé ethnic group, native to Ivory Coast, are one of the most recognized and refined expressions of traditional African art. Carved by skilled artisans, these sculptures stand out for their formal balance, harmonious proportions, and polished finish that reflects the Baoulé aesthetic ideal of beauty, serenity, and self-control.
Among the best known are the blolo bian (spiritual husband) and blolo bla (spiritual wife) figures, which represent couples from the spiritual world and fulfill a protective and symbolic function in everyday life. These sculptures have not only artistic value, but also spiritual value, as they mediate the relationship between the individual and invisible forces, seeking harmony, prosperity, and well-being.
Baulé figures usually represent standing characters, with frontal postures and calm expressions. Details in hairstyles, scarifications, and facial features reflect social status, identity, and beauty standards. The wood, generally dark and smoothly polished, reinforces the feeling of calm and dignity.
Today, Baoulé sculptures are highly valued in museums and international collections, where they are recognized as works that combine ritual function, profound symbolism, and an aesthetic of great artistic sophistication.
