Provenance: Directly from the photographer's personal archive
Some photographs simply record a moment.
Others quietly transform it into an icon.
Walking Le Dog is unquestionably one of Michael Joseph's most memorable early compositions. Photographed from an audacious low viewpoint, the image elevates an everyday stroll into a portrait of poise, power and presence. A statuesque woman stands against an expansive sky while, in the foreground, an imposing Afghan Hound commands the composition, its magnificent coat cascading through the frame with remarkable texture and tonal richness.
The handwritten title - Walking Le Dog - perfectly encapsulates Joseph's playful personality. Blending French chic with a knowing visual joke, it transforms an ordinary scene into something effortlessly fashionable, revealing the wit and irreverence that would later become hallmarks of his celebrated advertising career.
Produced during the early 1960s, before many of his internationally acclaimed commissions, the photograph already displays the visual vocabulary that would define his work: bold perspective, graphic geometry, sculptural silhouettes and carefully choreographed relationships between people and animals. Every element is deliberate, yet the photograph retains an effortless elegance that feels entirely spontaneous.
Hand-printed by Michael Joseph in his own darkroom from the original negative, this is not a later reproduction but a genuine one-off vintage silver gelatin print, personally titled and signed by the photographer. Preserved within his private archive for decades before being released by his daughter, Justine Joseph, it represents a rare opportunity to acquire an authentic work created entirely by the artist's own hands.
Collectors may recognise echoes of Norman Parkinson's elegance or Richard Avedon's graphic confidence, yet Joseph's cinematic eye and mischievous humour remain unmistakably his own. The sweeping silhouette of the Afghan Hound, set against the uncluttered sky, creates an image that is simultaneously stylish, sculptural and strikingly timeless.
Presented within a clean conservation mount, the photograph is ready for framing or exhibition.
Condition
Very good overall condition for an original silver gelatin print now more than sixty years old. The photograph retains excellent tonal depth and surface quality. Close examination reveals a few gentle signs of age and handling consistent with its vintage nature. Along the right-hand edge, the thick fibre-based photographic paper exhibits a slight undulation or waviness, a natural characteristic often encountered in hand-processed darkroom prints of this period and entirely consistent with their age and traditional manufacture. This subtle movement in the paper should be regarded as part of the print's authentic vintage character rather than a flaw. The reverse retains the original Harley Street studio stamp together with historic mounting tape, further reinforcing its provenance and working history.
