Paul Cheng wurde in Guangzhou, China, geboren und wuchs dort auf. Er studierte am Guangzhou Fine Art College, China, einer der renommiertesten Kunsthochschulen in China. Er erwarb seinen Bachelor of Fine Arts und unterrichtete an derselben Schule. Seine Gemälde wurden in verschiedenen Kunstwettbewerben in China, Australien und den Vereinigten Staaten ausgestellt und er ist zu einem preisgekrönten Künstler geworden. Paul Cheng wurde im Southwest Art Magazine im April 2013 vorgestellt. Er arbeitete für einige große Unterhaltungsfirmen als Senior Visual Development Artist, Art Director und Senior Illustrator bei Gaming-Unternehmen in Australien und den USA. Diese Projekte, an denen er mitgewirkt hat, wurden entweder für den Oscars Best Animation Feature Film nominiert oder erhielten den Oscar in der Kategorie Outstanding Achievement in Character Design in an Animated Feature Production sowie einen Emmy Award.
