Released in 1976, the Canon AE-1 is one of the most significant 35mm SLR cameras ever made. Built around a microprocessor that allowed Canon to simplify the mechanism and automate production, it became one of the first genuinely affordable cameras to offer TTL shutter-priority automatic exposure. It went on to sell millions of units worldwide and helped define the look of the consumer SLR for a generation. It uses the Canon FD lens mount and offers both shutter-priority AE and full manual control.

The lens included here, the Canon FD 50mm f/1.8 S.C., is the classic "nifty fifty" standard lens. It uses a six-element, four-group double-Gauss optical design with Canon's Spectra Coating (S.C.), and it features the original FD breech-lock mount with the chrome locking ring. Both the camera body and the lens are engraved "Made in Japan."

Mount and compatibility
Canon FD mount, manual focus. It mounts natively on all Canon FD-mount SLR bodies. On modern mirrorless cameras (Sony E, Fujifilm X, Micro Four Thirds, Canon RF/EF-M, and others) it can be used with a simple FD-mount adapter while retaining infinity focus. Please note this is the original breech-lock FD lens, which is fastened by turning the separate chrome ring rather than rotating the whole lens barrel.

Condition: USED — Excellent
Pre-owned, with distinct signs of use. The camera is mechanically functional and the meter responds correctly. Please read the Optical Condition section below carefully, as the lens has significant internal haze.

Appearance
Scuffs and scratches consistent with normal use.

Optical Condition
Lens: there is heavy internal haze across the glass. This is a clearly visible optical defect, not light dust. In use it will noticeably reduce contrast and can cause flare and veiling, particularly when shooting toward bright light. Please review the lens photos carefully to assess the extent before bidding.
Finder: there is haze inside the viewfinder. There is also very slight deterioration at the edge of the mirror, which is unlikely to be noticeable in normal use.

Functional
The camera operates properly. Power and battery contact are good, and the light meter responds correctly. The shutter fires and the film advance works.
The light seals in the mirror box and film chamber have been partially replaced.
The camera uses a 6V battery (4LR44 / A544 type).
As with any vintage mechanical camera, we recommend running a test roll before important shooting.
