Key Characteristics

Shape: It features a flat, wide blade with deep notches carved into both sides, creating a shape that resembles a human liver or kidney.Materials: Most traditional pieces were crafted from dense whale bone (paraoa) or native hardwoods.Carvings: The butt of the handle (reke) is usually carved into an intricate human head or figure, and it features a small hole for a wrist cord (tau).

Combat Function

In close-quarters battle, the Kotiate was a devastating weapon used for quick, thrusting strikes. The unique side notches were not just decorative. Warriors used them to trap an opponent's weapon, twist it away, or hook limbs during combat.
