Vom Verkäufer bereitgestellte Beschreibung

Wunderschöner, älterer Wandteppich aus Grünlandschaften, stammt aus Audenarde (Oudenaarde, Belgisch-Flandern),

dating from the end of the 17th century or the beginning of the 18th century, period 1680-1720. This large wall work represents an idyllic forest landscape typischer Flemish greens, with tall trees, lush vegetation, water elements and an airy composition that offers a beautiful perspective. The main border is richly adorned with arabesques, acanthus leaves and floral motifs in warm tones of red, pink, beige and gold, characteristic of Audenarde production from this period.

Audenarde was, alongside Brussels and Enghien, one of the most important centers for tapestry weaving in the Southern Netherlands. Since the 16th century, the city specialized in verdures, landscape tapestries intended for a broader market than the prestigious court pieces of Brussels. In the 17th and especially the early 18th century, Audenarde workshops produced these decorative tapestries highly valued by the bourgeoisie and provincial European nobility. They served both as thermal insulation, as wall decoration, and as a marker of status. This style evolved from dense compositions with large leaves of the 16th century to more picturesque and airy landscapes in the 17th-18th centuries, influenced by the landscape painting of the era.

Technically, this tapestry was made by hand on a plain loom, typical of Audenarde workshops. It is mainly woven in wool, with probably a few silk threads to add brightness and reflections to the details. The weaving density is medium to good for this type of production: sturdy and decorative,

This authentic piece has more than 300 years of history. It is in an exceptional condition for its age, with routine restorations that attest to its regular maintenance over the centuries. The tapestry has not been cut and presents, apart from the small dark green border with fringes which was probably reapplied at the end of the 19th century to match the fashion of the time and facilitate hanging, its original configuration.

There is normal and honorable wear for its great age, with some areas of missing or worn threads, as well as old repairs visible on the reverse. Despite these signs of time, the overall wall presence remains very beautiful, the colors still vibrant and an undeniable historic charm that makes it a piece of character

Dimensions: 247 cm x 208 cm

An exceptional opportunity to acquire an authentic fragment of history, for the enthusiast or collector who will value its singular charm.
