A rare pair of kiku’tôdai 菊灯台 (chrysanthemum-shaped pedestal oil lamps), finished in glossy black lacquer.
Each lamp is surmounted by a patinated bronze oil reservoir with wick holder, supported before a circular silver leaf-covered reflector that softly amplifies and reflects the flame. The reflector is mounted on a slender pillar rising from a chrysanthemum-shaped lobed foot, enriched with finely cast scrolling vine mounts.
Although deceptively simple in appearance, the upper section of each pillar is adjustable, allowing the direction of the light to be altered while the base remains firmly in place.
Complete with wooden tomobako 共箱 (storage box).
Period:
Japan – 19th century (Late Edo period/Meiji period)
Dimensions:
Height 64.5 cm, Diameter 14.7 cm.
Considering their age, the lamps are in very good condition, with minor traces of wear and small losses consistent with age. Please refer to the photographs for a clear condition reference.
When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity.
