Er begann 1955 mit dem Fotografieren, während er durch Europa reiste. 1972 trat er Magnum Photos bei. Viele Freeds Fotografien wurden in der internationalen Presse veröffentlicht, darunter Der Spiegel, Der Stern, The London Sunday Times Magazine, GEO, L’Express, Libération, The New York Times Magazine und Fortune.
