Title: Flower Vase (Hanaire) — Deep Lapis-Blue Ruri Glaze with Carved Relief Decoration, Special Creation 2000, with Original Signed Box and Certificate
This is a Japanese ceramic flower vase from the celebrated Kobei kiln of Tajimi, Gifu, produced under the direction of Kato Takuo, a designated Living National Treasure (Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property). The piece is a special creation dated 2000 and comes complete with its original signed wooden box (tomobako) and the kiln's printed certificate of provenance.
About the Kiln and Kato Takuo
The Kobei kiln was founded in 1804 and has continued for over two hundred years as one of the great kilns of Mino ware. Its sixth-generation master, Kato Takuo (1917–2005), devoted his life to reviving lost ceramic techniques — most famously the legendary Persian luster (rasuta-sai) glaze and the Shosoin three-color (sancai) ware, the latter reconstructed at the request of the Imperial Household Agency. In 1995 he was designated a Living National Treasure. His work fused ancient Persian ceramic art with Japanese tradition, and the kiln's signature blue glaze descends directly from the Persian blue he pioneered.
About the Glaze — Ruri (Lapis Blue)
This vase is covered in a deep, luminous ruri (lapis lazuli) blue glaze — a rich cobalt tone rooted in the Persian blue tradition that the kiln is renowned for. In West Asian culture this blue was revered as a sacred, life-giving color, and here it pools beautifully in the carved recesses, deepening in tone where the glaze gathers and creating a jewel-like surface.
About the Form and Decoration
The vase takes an elegant bottle form with a slender neck, small applied lug handles at the shoulder, and a body carved in relief with a bold, fruit-like clustered motif. Fine combed lines encircle the neck. The interplay of carved depth and flowing blue glaze gives the surface a sculptural, tactile richness, making it as much a work of art as a functional flower vessel.
