Bamboo Coral (often referred to as sea bamboo) is naturally pale or white. To achieve vibrant colours, it undergoes a manufacturing process that involves cutting the branches into beads, saturating them with dye, and impregnating them with resin to add structural strength and a glossy finish.
The dyeing and stabilization process for these organic gemstone beads involves several key stages:
Shaping & Prepping: Natural bamboo coral is harvested, cleaned, and hand-cut or carved into the desired bead shapes.
The Dye Bath: The porous calcium carbonate skeleton of the coral is soaked in a dye bath. Manufacturers use either a fast water-dye process or a prolonged hot oil dye bath (which can take a week or more) to penetrate the bead completely to its core. For deep, saturated coloring, dye is sometimes actively injected into the coral.
Resin Stabilization: Because natural bamboo coral is relatively porous and brittle , it is impregnated with a colorless polymer or epoxy resin to fill voids, prevent cracking, and harden the material. Sometimes, the resin is mixed with red or other enhancing dyes to boost the vibrancy.
Polishing: Once the resin is cured and the beads are sanded, they are buffed and polished to achieve the high-gloss shine characteristic of coral jewellery.
