Kinzan ware
The company was founded in 1854 by Aburaya Soemon, a merchant purveyor to the Matsudaira Domain. Later, when local people were familiar with the kiln and called it "Karatsuyu" or "Sarayama," a wealthy family in the town named it "Kinzan-yaki" after part of Lake Nakaumi (old name Nishikigaura), and so the name was derived from this. Kinzan-yaki is characterized by its unique molding and the wide variety of glaze tones and color combinations. There was a time when iron and white glazes were used, but today the techniques of the fifth generation Nakajima Takeo, who devoted himself to mixing and developing colors using cinnabar glazes, gosu glazes, celadon glazes, and candy glazes, are inherited.
