Dutch East India Company (VOC) – Duit 1791 – Utrecht Chamber – Dutch East Indies – NGC Genuine
Offered is an original 1791 VOC Duit issued by the Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie – VOC) for circulation in the Dutch East Indies. Struck for the Utrecht Chamber, this historic copper coin has been professionally authenticated and encapsulated by NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) as Genuine, ensuring its authenticity and long-term preservation.
The holder identifies the coin as:
1791 VOC N.E. Indies Duit
Utrecht Chamber
NGC Genuine
Certification No. 8447944-030
Founded in 1602, the Dutch East India Company became one of history's most powerful trading enterprises and is widely regarded as the world's first multinational corporation. To facilitate trade across its extensive Asian network, the VOC issued its own copper duits for use throughout the Dutch East Indies and other overseas territories.
This example was struck by the Utrecht Chamber, one of the six regional chambers that administered the VOC. Utrecht issues are collected alongside those of Holland, Zeeland, West Friesland, Delft, and Enkhuizen, with each chamber distinguished by subtle differences in mintmarks and production.
The obverse features the iconic intertwined VOC monogram with the date 1791, while the reverse bears the crowned arms of the Province of Utrecht, representing the issuing chamber. These coins circulated extensively in present-day Indonesia and throughout the Dutch colonial trading network during the final years of the VOC before its dissolution in 1799.
Professionally authenticated by NGC, this coin is an excellent addition to any collection focused on Dutch colonial history, maritime trade, or eighteenth-century world coinage.
