Vintage Art Nouveau Embossed Leather Thermometer with Stand and Wall Mount (circa 1890s–1910s)
Add a touch of turn-of-the-century elegance to your home with this exquisite vintage thermometer, featuring beautifully crafted embossed and tooled leather housing. Originating from Europe (frequently produced in countries like Germany, Austria, or the United Kingdom) during the height of the Art Nouveau era (circa 1890s–1910s), this piece reflects a period when tooled and embossed leather desk accessories, thermometers, and picture frames featuring organic botanical motifs—such as maple leaves and burrs—were immensely popular during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, heavily influenced by the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau design movements.
The front panel is intricately detailed with a tactile, dimensional botanical motif against a rich, antiqued caramel-brown finish. At the center is a brass thermometer scale plate marked with "R" and "C" (representing Réaumur and Celsius scales), mounted securely with original brass brads. The back features a patterned fabric-backed easel stand complete with an integrated fold-out strut for tabletop display and an original top hanging loop for wall mounting.
Maker's Mark & Crest Details:
Stamped onto the fabric backing is an intriguing historical logo featuring a detailed depiction of a historic sailing ship riding over water inside an oval cartouche, framed by cloverleaf patterns. Flanking the ship's mast and the flag wrapped around it are the initials "C" and "H". On antique European goods from this era, these flanking letters represent the proprietary initials of the specific maker, leather goods workshop, or merchant house responsible for its production.
Type: Tabletop & Wall-Hanging Decorative Thermometer
Material: Tooled/embossed leather, brass faceplate, glass thermometer tube, and fabric-backed folding easel strut.
Era: Art Nouveau Period (circa late 19th to early 20th century)
Origin: European (crafted in regions such as Germany, Austria, or the United Kingdom)
Condition: Wonderful vintage condition with a gorgeous aged patina, clean legible scales, and minor age-appropriate wear to the leather and backing consistent with a historic piece of this age. For full transparency, the small cord/ribbon connecting the back of the thermometer to the standing strut is loose, but it is present and not lost; it can be easily reattached, though for honesty purposes, it was left untouched and not reattached by the seller.
