Elegant later half parchment binding with corners, boards covered in paper and gilt title on a smooth back panel. Overall excellent specimen of this important eighteenth-century chess treatise. As with all ancient volumes, minor defects or restorations not expressly mentioned are possible.

BIOGRAPHY OF THE AUTHOR
Giovanni Battista Lolli (1698-1769) was one of the most important chess theorists of the eighteenth century and a key figure of the so‑called Scuola Modenese, alongside Domenico Lorenzo Ponziani and Ercole del Rio. In the eighteenth century the Modena milieu became one of Europe’s main laboratories for systematic study of the game, developing a theory strongly oriented toward initiative, attack, rapid development of pieces and the search for decisive combinations against the opponent’s king. Lolli brought this tradition to an extraordinary level of completeness. His Osservazioni teorico-pratiche of 1763 constitute a monumental work in which practical experience is subjected to rigorous analysis, with systematic study of openings, variations, tactical positions and endgames. Of particular importance are his endgame studies, some of which represent true classics of chess theory. The name of Lolli is still present today in chess technical terminology, associated with opening variations and famous attacking set-ups. His work circulated widely among European theorists and helped consolidate the international reputation of the Italian school, profoundly influencing chess literature between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
