Linnaeus, Carl & Jo. Andrea Murray “Systema Vegetabilivm”. 2nd edition

The Systema Vegetabilium originally split off from Linnaeus's monumental Systema Naturae to serve as a specialized, compact reference specifically for the plant kingdom.

Historical value of this book.
This particular 2nd( 14th ) edition is historically significant to botanists because it integrates many new plant descriptions collected from global explorations, including new Japanese species and from South Africa described by the famous naturalist Carl Peter Thunberg.

It uses the famous binomial nomenclature (genus and species) developed by Linnaeus to classify the entire plant kingdom.
The book was prepared and supervised by the German-Swedish physician and botanist Johann Andreas Murray.

Systema Vegetabilium is a book published in four editions, following twelve earlier editions known as Systema Naturae .
The first edition, published in 1774 and edited by Johan Andreas Murray is counted as edition 13 because it continues from the 12th edition of Systema Naturae.
The second edition, (counted as the 14th of Systema Naturae) published in 1784, includes plant species described by J.A. Murray and Carl Peter Thunberg.
The third edition (counted as the 15th) was edited by C.H. Persoon, who was a South African mycologist and made additions to Linnaeus' mushroom taxonomy.
All the names in it are attributed to Carl Linnaeus.
