Korean bandaji-style scholar’s chest with six drawers and fish-shaped brass lock – Korea – 20th century
A decorative and well-constructed small Korean storage chest, made in the traditional bandaji style and probably dating from the 20th century.
The horizontally proportioned chest combines a large central drop-front storage compartment with three small drawers on either side. Each drawer is fitted with a decorative ring pull.
The front is extensively decorated with pierced and engraved brass fittings, including ornamental corner mounts, large shaped hinge plates and an impressive fish-shaped lock or hasp with its decorative tassel. Fish-shaped locks are a characteristic feature of traditional Korean furniture and were associated with protection and good fortune.
The chest is constructed from dark-stained wood. Traditional dovetailed joints remain clearly visible along the top and sides, providing an interesting indication of its construction. It stands on a shaped wooden base with a pierced and scalloped apron.
The six drawers and the central drop-front compartment can be opened.
The chest is in honest vintage condition, with visible traces of age and use. These include surface scratches, scuffs, areas of wear to the finish, small age-related cracks and minor irregularities in the wood.
The brass fittings show natural oxidation and patina. The photographs form an important part of the condition description and should be studied carefully.
