Vom Verkäufer bereitgestellte Beschreibung
Igbo Coat of Arms Sculpture
Enugu, Southeast Nigeria
Wood, polychrome finish
The fully sculpted head rises above a tall, tapered neck, its pronounced contours creating a striking presence. The face is characterized by strong cheeks, a prominent nose, narrow eyes, and an open mouth with visible teeth. Large, disc-shaped ears flank the head. A tall, horn- or comb-like crest rises above the forehead. Black, white, red, and traces of blue divide the physiognomy into contrasting fields; wear and losses reveal the wood beneath. Small holes on the face and neck likely served to attach additional elements.
The work is attributed to the Igbo cultural context of the Enugu region in southeastern Nigeria. The mask and crest traditions there are extraordinarily diverse and closely linked to mmanwu, the performative embodiment of spirit beings. Masquerades accompany festivals, initiations, funerals, and communal ceremonies; carved heads could appear as components of larger costume ensembles. The central importance of the head and towering crowns is documented in various regional Igbo styles.
The term "heraldic sculpture" should therefore be understood more as a designation related to the history of collecting than as a clearly established indigenous object category.
Literature (selection):
Cole, Herbert M. / Aniakor, Chike C.: Igbo Arts: Community and Cosmos. Los Angeles 1984.
Ottenberg, Simon: Masked Rituals of Afikpo. Seattle 1975.
Cole, Herbert M.: Mmanwu: Traditional Igbo Masquerades. Lagos 1985.
Inv. No. MAZ21033
