Hisham ibn ʿAbd al-Malik ruled during the later Umayyad Caliphate, when the empire still stretched from Iberia to Central Asia. His reign combined administrative and fiscal consolidation with major frontier wars against Byzantium, the Khazars and in Central Asia. Despite relative stability, mounting military costs, tribal rivalries and regional unrest foreshadowed the weakening of Umayyad power after his death.
