Staff finial of Oshe Shango type – Yoruba – Nigeria – Wood – 20th century
Details
Origin: Yoruba people
Country: Nigeria
Material: Wood
Height: 26 cm, 29 cm with stand
Period: second half of 20th century
Provenance: Ex private French collection
Description
A finely carved Yoruba staff finial of Oshe Shango type, depicting a standing female figure with elongated proportions, hands placed on the hips, and a high crested coiffure surmounted by a rounded element.
This example is especially attractive for the elegance of its vertical silhouette and the strength of its visual presence. The dark glossy patina is animated by warm reddish highlights, particularly on the face, body and lower shaft, creating a beautiful contrast and enhancing the sculptural quality of the piece.
The face is expressive, with large stylized eyes, a finely carved mouth and scarification-like facial marks. The body is compact yet well balanced, with carefully treated arms, bracelets, torso and feet. The ornament encircling the waist, probably a belt, echoes the same formal vocabulary as the bracelets, giving the figure a pleasing sense of rhythm and unity.
Objects of this type relate to the Yoruba visual tradition associated with Shango, the deity of thunder and power. This example is best appreciated for its strong decorative impact, harmonious proportions and attractive aged surface.
Mounted on a metal display stand, included with the object.
Offered without reserve price.
Condition
Wear, abrasions, rubbing and surface irregularities consistent with age and use. Minor losses, small chips and age-related marks, especially on exposed areas. Good overall presentation. Please refer to the photographs.
Included
The figure and its metal display stand.
