Green Orthopyroxene Lines and Crystals

The outstanding visual feature of these specimens is the rich distribution of green, glass-lustrous orthopyroxene structures.

Numerous crystals and elongated pyroxene-rich areas run through the pale beige-golden matrix like fine green lines. Their strong contrast gives the pieces a vivid, complex and almost gemstone-like appearance.


Unfortunately, the true colour and brilliance of these structures are difficult to reproduce accurately in photographs. Depending on the lighting and viewing angle, many of the green crystals and lines may appear dark or almost black in the images.

In person, however, they reveal distinct olive-green to deep-green tones with a pronounced glass-like lustre. When the specimens are moved under direct light, different crystal surfaces begin to sparkle and flash, revealing a depth and brilliance that static photographs can only partially capture.

The presence of two separate specimens makes this lot particularly appealing: both pieces display their own individual arrangement of green orthopyroxene, matrix and melt-related structures. Together, they create a more complete and visually diverse presentation than a single fragment alone.


The Oldest Known Igneous Crust Material

Erg Chech 002 is far more than simply a rare achondrite. It is widely regarded as the oldest known rock from an igneous planetary crust and is frequently described as the oldest known volcanic rock in our Solar System.

EC 002 crystallised approximately 4.565 billion years ago, during an extraordinarily early phase in the formation of the Solar System, when the first differentiated protoplanets were beginning to develop their own magmatic crusts.

This material originated on an ancient planetary precursor that had already generated sufficient internal heat to partially melt, differentiate and form true igneous rock. The parent body was later destroyed, leaving Erg Chech 002 as an exceptionally rare surviving fragment of one of the earliest known planetary crusts.

Holding these specimens therefore means holding genuine material from the very beginning of planetary evolution.


Extremely Limited and Scientifically Important

Erg Chech 002 was discovered in Algeria in 2020 and is officially classified as an ungrouped achondrite.
