This handcrafted Japanese matcha tea bowl was created by Kato Shuzan in the Mino ceramic tradition and is finished in the expressive Shino ware style.

The generously formed body has a softly squared, irregular silhouette with a gently undulating rim. Its thick creamy-white Shino glaze displays distinctive crawling, pinholes, fine crazing, and warm reddish-brown glimpses of the clay beneath. These naturally varied kiln effects create a richly textured surface and embody the rustic wabi-sabi aesthetic associated with Japanese tea ceramics.

The smooth, pale interior provides an attractive contrast to the highly textured exterior. A potter’s seal reading “Shu” is impressed beside the foot. The original signed wooden storage box, inscribed “Shino” and “Shuzan zo,” is included.

Purpose: A chawan for preparing and drinking matcha during the Japanese tea ceremony. It may also be displayed as a decorative example of traditional Japanese tea pottery.
