Ancient Roman mosaic glass bead with multiple eye motifs.

A distinctive glass bead of rounded cuboid form, made from translucent olive-grey glass and decorated with multiple applied mosaic eye motifs. The decorative elements consist predominantly of cream/white circular patterns with blue-grey centres.

The bead has a central perforation for suspension. The surface shows age-related wear, deposits and weathering, while the mosaic decoration remains clearly visible. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.

Provenance:
This individual bead formed part of a necklace consisting of 35 ancient glass beads purchased by the present owner through Catawiki on 26 July 2017.

The original Catawiki lot was offered as “Rare Ancient Roman Mosaic glass beaded necklace – 55.6gr”, Roman, 2nd–3rd century AD, lot no. 12282099, order no. 7941089, sold by Pax-Romana.

According to the original listing, the necklace came from an old British collection.

The present owner is a private collector of ancient beads and retains documentation relating to the original Catawiki purchase. The necklace has subsequently been separated, and selected beads from the collection are now being offered individually.
