One of Papua’s characteristic traditional instruments, the tifa was used by the Sentani people during communal gatherings, ceremonies, song and dance, providing rhythm while contributing to social and ceremonial life. As a single headed drum, it belongs to a widespread Papuan musical tradition.

Hand shaped and carved, this example has a strong sculptural presence and individual character. Its aged surface and signs of indigenous use give the piece an attractive authenticity and distinguish it from objects made solely for the tourist market.

Old tifa drums are interesting not only as musical instruments but also as sculptural and ethnographic objects. They represent an important aspect of traditional community life around Lake Sentani, where music, dance and ceremony have long been closely interconnected.

An appealing and increasingly difficult to find ethnographic object for collectors of traditional art and material culture from West Papua, with good age, visible use and documented field provenance.
