Olga Vin - SAMO, XXL

Original hand-painted acrylic painting on canvas inspired by the iconic SAMO graffiti.

The work incorporates the famous SAMO phrase “For those of us who merely tolerate civilization”, originally appearing as part of the poetic and provocative SAMO graffiti interventions across New York in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Here, the graffiti text is combined with a contemporary figurative image, creating a dialogue between street art, painting and the mythology of the New York avant-garde.
The reclining figure, rendered in a raw, graphic black-and-beige language, contrasts with the hand-drawn SAMO lettering.
The work explores the relationship between street culture, art history and contemporary image-making, treating SAMO not simply as a historical reference but as a symbol of resistance to conventional systems and institutionalized culture.

About the artist

Dr Olga Winiarczyk is an intermedia artist and researcher with a Doctor of Arts degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Her works have been shown in over 40 exhibitions in Poland and abroad, including the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, the Centre of Polish Sculpture in Orońsko, Labirynt Gallery in Lublin, Kyiv Art Week, Venice, Budapest, New York and the Canary Islands.
She is the recipient of several awards and distinctions, including a scholarship from the Polish Minister of Culture and National Heritage. Her current practice explores interspecies art, primates, rituals and non-human perspectives.
