An interesting and uncommon set of two small traditional korwar amulets or charm figures originating from the Waropen Coast, along Geelvink Bay, present day Cenderawasih Bay, West Papua.

Korwar figures belong to an important ancestral tradition of the peoples living around Geelvink Bay. While larger korwar figures were traditionally associated with ancestors and could be kept within houses or sacred contexts, smaller examples such as these were more personal objects. They could function as protective charms or amulets and formed part of a spiritual world in which ancestors remained closely connected with the living.

The two figures are individually carved and have the characteristic compact and strongly stylised appearance associated with korwar imagery. Their small size gives them a particularly intimate character. Such objects were made to be handled and kept rather than simply displayed.

The Waropen Coast has its own distinctive artistic traditions, related to but different from those of Biak, Numfor and other areas surrounding Geelvink Bay. Small traditional objects from this region are considerably less frequently encountered on the Western tribal art market than the better known larger korwar figures.

Together these two amulets form an attractive and coherent pair and provide an interesting example of the small scale ancestral and protective sculpture of the Geelvink Bay region.
