This striking bronze vase is a fine example of Takaoka Doki, the celebrated traditional bronzeware craft of Takaoka City in Toyama Prefecture, Japan. With more than 400 years of metal-casting heritage, Takaoka is one of Japan’s foremost centers of traditional bronze craftsmanship.

Inspired by archaic Chinese ritual bronzes, the vase features a deep, lustrous green patina that evokes the dignified appearance of ancient bronzeware.

The rounded body is richly decorated with a bold taotie (mythical beast-mask) motif in high relief. Rooted in ancient Chinese bronze-casting traditions, this powerful decorative motif has long been admired and reinterpreted by generations of Japanese metalworkers.

Flanking the neck are two finely cast handles in the form of mythical beast heads. Rendered with impressive detail, these sculptural handles add a dramatic sense of movement and gravitas to the piece.

The contrast between the refined silhouette and deeply modeled relief decoration creates beautiful variations of light and shadow. Combined with the rich patina and substantial weight of the bronze, the vase has a dignified, sculptural presence.
