Vasco - Behind the Walls

Behind the Walls is created on delicate tissue paper using acrylic lacquer spray. The paper is deliberately crumpled and then unfolded and smoothed again. This physical process leaves permanent folds, fractures and irregularities across the surface. The spray settles differently on every raised and recessed area, allowing color, shadow and texture to emerge from the damaged and transformed paper itself.
The process is essential to the work. The material is not returned to its original state. Every fold remains as evidence of what has happened to it.
Within the Boundaries series, these traces become a metaphor for the invisible structures we build around ourselves — boundaries shaped by memory, fear, experience, protection and belonging.
What appears to be a wall may also be a skin. What seems to separate may also protect. And what looks damaged may simply carry the evidence of having lived.
We spend much of our lives constructing walls between ourselves and the world, between who we are and who we believe we should be. Eventually, we may forget what exists behind them.
But perhaps there is no separate world behind the wall. Perhaps the wall itself has become part of us.
Behind the Walls does not ask us to destroy our boundaries. It asks us to recognize them — to understand what they protect, what they conceal, and whether we still need them.
Sometimes freedom does not begin when the wall disappears.
It begins when we dare to see what lies behind it.
