Carmen Mercedes McRae (1920-1994) war eine amerikanische Sängerin, Komponistin, Pianistin und Schauspielerin und gilt als eine der einflussreichsten Jazzsängerinnen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Sie ließ sich von Billie Holiday inspirieren, entwickelte jedoch einen eigenständigen und persönlichen Gesangsstil. Im Verlauf ihrer Karriere (1945–1991) nahm sie über 60 Alben auf und trat in den Vereinigten Staaten, Europa und Japan auf und nahm dort auf.
