The presence of three korwar figures gives this canoe ornament an unusually powerful sculptural appearance. The figures are integrated into the overall composition rather than simply added as decoration, creating a remarkable combination of functional object, traditional carving and ancestral imagery.

Decorated canoe elements were highly visible objects. A canoe was much more than a means of transportation in the coastal communities of West Papua: it was essential for fishing, travelling, exchange and maintaining contacts between villages and islands. Elaborately carved parts could therefore also express identity, prestige and the artistic traditions of their owners and community.

The sculpture has the strong, somewhat archaic character associated with older Geelvink Bay carving. The three korwar figures make it especially appealing when viewed as a free-standing sculpture. The age, surface and traces of use contribute considerably to its presence and authenticity.
