1782 Introduced in 1963, the Sportsmatic 5 represented the beginning of Seiko’s enduring “5” concept, combining automatic winding, a day-date display, water-resistant case construction, a recessed crown and a durable case design. The Sportsmatic 5 Deluxe was a more refined version of the collection, distinguished by upgraded movements, elaborate dial details and higher jewel counts.

Produced in September 1966, this example features an attractive silver sunburst dial surrounded by a finely fluted chapter ring. Applied baton hour markers, dauphine-style hands and a framed day-date display give the watch an elegant character, while its broad angular lugs add a distinctly mid-1960s presence.

Condition:

The watch is in good vintage condition and presents attractively. Its silver sunburst dial has developed an even, warm patina that gives it considerable vintage character. Age-related spotting, discolouration and small surface imperfections are visible across the dial, but the printing, applied hour markers and framed day-date display remain clear and legible.

The dauphine-style hands and applied markers show light age-related patination. The finely fluted chapter ring is well preserved and adds depth and texture around the dial.

The stainless-steel case displays scratches, small marks and general signs of previous wear consistent with its age. Its broad, angular lugs and characteristic mid-1960s profile remain clearly defined, although the polished surfaces show indications of previous polishing. The case back also bears scratches and wear, while the original dolphin emblem, reference and serial number remain visible.

A new, scratch-free crystal and a new black leather strap have been fitted. The automatic movement has been serviced, and all functions are operating correctly. A 3-month guarantee is provided on functionality.
