KI-gestützte Zusammenfassung

Vom Verkäufer bereitgestellte Beschreibung

Zulu / North Nguni Ugqoko Meat Platter – South Africa – attributed early 20th century

An old Southern African carved wooden meat platter, attributed to the Zulu / North Nguni cultural area.
The platter has been carved from a single substantial piece of wood, including the shallow elongated bowl, the two integral rectangular handles and the four short feet.

The upper surface displays extensive wear, scratches and a softly eroded surface resulting from long use. The underside has developed a considerably darker, almost black patina, contrasting strongly with the worn upper surface.

Platters of this type, generally known as ugqoko, were traditionally used within Zulu-speaking communities for the presentation and sharing of meat at important communal and ceremonial occasions. Comparable examples are documented in museum and specialist ethnographic collections.

Particularly attractive are the strong sculptural proportions, the massive integral handles and the four individually carved feet. The extensive surface wear and patination have been left completely untouched.

Provenance: personally acquired by the present owner in South Africa approximately 30 years ago and kept in the same private collection ever since.

Culture: Zulu / North Nguni, attributed
Origin: South Africa
Period: attributed to early 20th century
Material: carved wood
Condition: authentic age- and use-related wear, scratches, abrasions and strong patina; no restoration known.
