Militaria-Foto - 190+ Fotografien & Postkartenalbum Royal Navy HMS Durban Südamerika 1931–1933 Graf Zeppelin, Öl - 1931

The album comprises 48 pages and contains more than 190 original photographs and postcards, together with contemporary captions, annotations, a hand-drawn map of South America showing the route and places visited, and other contemporary printed material. The photographs remain mounted in their original positions within the album, preserving the original arrangement and context in which the collection was compiled. Among the most important and interesting material are approximately four or five original photographs relating to General Luis Miguel Sánchez Cerro, President of Peru. These include photographs of the President aboard the ship and formal photographs connected with the naval visit. Two of the larger photographs appear to be professional studio or press photographs and both carry the same embossed photographic/press mark in the lower corner. One of the photographs has the contemporary caption “Officers being presented to President”, while another is captioned “Gen. Sanchez Cerro, President of Peru, arriving on board to lunch with the Commodore”. The album therefore contains an unusually substantial group of contemporary images relating to the President and his connection with the Royal Navy visit. The album also contains an original photograph of the famous Graf Zeppelin at Rio de Janeiro. Of particular interest, the surviving historical record of HMS Durban identifies a photograph of the Graf Zeppelin at Rio de Janeiro. A further photograph of the Graf Zeppelin has also been found within the album in postcard form, providing an additional contemporary Zeppelin-related item. Other important material includes a large photograph of the officers and ship’s company, including a photograph bearing the handwritten/signature name “Jimmy”, numerous photographs of naval personnel and activities, views of ports and cities, social and shore scenes, and photographs documenting places visited during the South American service. The geographical material represented in the album includes, among others, Bermuda, Pernambuco/Recife, Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, Santos, Montevideo, Buenos Aires, Puerto Belgrano, the Falkland Islands including Port Stanley, and kidney island as well as Chilean and Peruvian ports and locations including Valparaiso, Talcahuano, Taltal, Antofagasta, Iquique, Callao/Lima and Talara, with further locations and stops represented throughout the album. The album also contains photographs of oil fields and oil installations in Peru, potentially relating to the important petroleum-producing region visited during the naval deployment. There are also photographs of Panama and the Panama Canal, and other South American locations and scenes. The album contains a number of contemporary National Geographic cuttings relating to places represented in the photographic collection. These appear to have been included alongside the original photographs as geographical reference material. There are also approximately six photographs apparently showing land reclamation or development in Bermuda, which may relate to the earlier Bermuda/America and West Indies Station period associated with HMS Durban. The album appears to have been compiled as a personal or private contemporary souvenir collection. The combination of original photographs, postcards, typed captions, handwritten annotations, the hand-drawn South American route map and the grouping of related photographs gives the album considerable documentary interest. The historical connection with HMS Durban is supported by surviving records of the ship's South American service. HMS Durban was part of the South American Division during this period, with Commodore R. H. O. Lane-Poole flying his broad pennant in the ship. Contemporary and later historical records specifically associate HMS Durban with Rio de Janeiro, the Graf Zeppelin, President Sánchez Cerro, the Falkland Islands, Valparaiso and the Panama Canal during this period. The album is offered as an original historical photographic archive. The HMS Durban attribution is given as a strong and researched attribution based on the contents and corresponding historical records, rather than claiming that every individual photograph has been conclusively identified. Condition is consistent with age. The leather-bound album remains structurally sound for its age. The photographs have not been removed apart from two pages that photographs have been removed sometime in the past as shown. The album has otherwise been preserved in its original form and the photographs remain together as one collection. A highly interesting and substantial collection of early 1930s Royal Navy, South American, Peruvian, Brazilian, Chilean, Falkland Islands and historical aviation/Zeppelin photographic material, with several particularly notable individual photographs and a strong potential connection to HMS Durban's South American commission. Further locations, photographs and subjects are present throughout the 48-page album as seen in photographs attached..
