Exemplifying the master weaving tradition of the Volta Region, this monumental mid-20th-century Ewe ceremonial prestige cloth (Agbamevor, specifically classified as Adanuvor) embodies the expressive figurative complexity that distinguishes Ewe textile arts from neighboring West African traditions. Woven by hand on traditional narrow-band horizontal treadle looms, the textile is constructed from individual strips joined selvedge-to-selvedge to achieve the monumental proportions required for a man’s ceremonial toga-style drapery. The composition is grounded in an incandescent yellow field structured by vertical pinstripes of forest green, terracotta red, and black.
Across alternating registers, the master weaver has inlaid a rich vocabulary of polychrome supplementary weft-float motifs. The textile retains remarkable color saturation, with its hand-spun and mercerized yarns showing minimal fading. Decades of ceremonial wear and handling are evidenced by authentic structural stress: two substantial horizontal tears cross several warp bands, accompanied by scattered seam separations. These areas remain unrestored, offering an honest, museum-worthy candidate for textile conservation and archival mounting.
