KI-gestützte Zusammenfassung

Vom Verkäufer bereitgestellte Beschreibung

A superb and beautifully decorated bone dagger from Central Asmat, West Papua, field collected in the mid-1990s.

The dagger is made from the strong leg bone of a cassowary and is decorated with cassowary feathers, natural jungle materials and Coix seeds, also known as Job’s tears. The combination of the polished bone with the feathers and seeds gives the object a particularly strong and authentic appearance.

Bone daggers of this type were important personal objects for Asmat men. They could be worn as part of a man’s ceremonial or status equipment and were associated with male identity, prestige and display. At the same time, the strong pointed bone made them functional objects that could also serve as weapons or for personal defence.

This is an especially fine and complete example, with an attractive balance between the long bone dagger and its traditional decoration. A very desirable piece for a collection of Asmat, West Papuan or Oceanic tribal art.
