Background Information:

This bronze finger ring dates to the Roman Imperial period and is distinguished by its raised bezel, which is formed as a stylised shield. The bezel has a pointed, triangular profile that closely resembles the elongated shield forms known from Celtic and Romano-Celtic artistic traditions. While it cannot be stated with certainty that the ring intentionally represents a Celtic shield, its outline is strongly reminiscent of such forms and reflects the blending of Roman and indigenous provincial artistic influences.

Rings of this type served both practical and symbolic purposes. They functioned as personal ornaments and, in some cases, as signet rings or amuletic objects expressing status, identity, or protection. During the 1st and 2nd centuries A.D., Roman craftsmen produced a wide variety of bronze rings ranging from simple everyday examples to more elaborate designs inspired by military equipment, geometric motifs, and local traditions.

The Roman Empire incorporated numerous Celtic provinces, including Gaul and Britannia, where Roman fashions merged with long-established native decorative styles. Jewellery produced in these regions often combines Roman manufacturing techniques with distinctly Celtic design elements. Shield-shaped bezels are therefore regarded as characteristic of the cultural interaction that developed within the north-western provinces of the Empire.

The ring was cast in bronze and finished by hand, demonstrating the skilled metalworking traditions of provincial Roman workshops. Bronze was widely chosen for personal jewellery because it was durable, affordable, and suitable for everyday wear by soldiers, merchants, craftsmen, and civilians alike. Similar rings have been recovered from settlements, military sites, and rural communities throughout the Roman provinces ofope.

Dating to the 1st–2nd century A.D., this ring belongs to the height of the Roman Imperial period, when military expansion, trade, and cultural exchange encouraged the development of distinctive regional styles while remaining firmly rooted in Roman craftsmanship.
